As you may have noticed, we've been dealing with a protracted series of spam attacks on the forums, and have employed all the usual methods to prevent disruption, short of means that would be an inconvenience or delay to new members' access to these boards.
This weekend we experienced a fairly intense denial of service attack from spammers on G-Mail claiming to be new members from places like Croatia, Serbia, the Azores, etc. that tied up a lot of our time flushing this trash down the cyber-sewers and off of our forums.
As these fools all took the time to sign up, get a confirmation email and respond to that, and then manually register with visual recognition completion, we've concluded these idiots have way too much time on their hands for us to be able to block them promptly and effectively while they are able to self-register.
Solution: All new membership applications will have to wait a day for ADMIN permission to confirm membership and be allowed to post on our forums. Trolls will be stopped from posting and stopped from becoming registered members until we check them out.
This will inconvenience new potential members who discover the forums and want to post their pithy comments immediately. Hopefully all legitimate potential new members will have the patience to wait one day for their application to the forums to be accepted. Since there is no charge for Forums membership, we're hopeful people will not go off in a huff if we need to check them out before letting them join the conversation.
If we allowed the trolls to continue to have immediate access, we'd soon be shutting these forums down in favor of a paid-members-only access system, which nobody really wants to do. Tough enough to get paid ASSA Memberships, without having to double down on paid forums entrance as well.
We've made the change tonight, with immediate effect. Any newbies wanting to chat on our forums will have to request access and wait for admin to check them out before they get to step foot on our boards. Good guys, we apologize for the delay in welcoming you to the forums. Spammers and trolls, if you are disappointed because you can't continue to screw with us, gee, that's just tough.
