Home cast slugs- whatcha think?

Postby rscotth on Sun Nov 01, 2009 8:59 pm

Hello- I am really glad to see a slug forum and figured you guys might like this................

There's this guy at work that casts his own slugs and talks about 100 yard shots within a 3" circle. Keep in mind this is from a smooth bore with iron sights so basically I'm thinking BS but that's just my own opinion. Anyway- just looking at the slug it looks good for a home casting but it's design looks like it wouldn't stabilize well and would create a low pressure area behing the "head" that would cause destabilization in the middle of the projectile. Am I thinking right?

I haven't got to shoot any but he said he'll give me a few and will post a range report when I get home from form this job if anyone is interested.
The only thing I could use for scale was a .40 S&W I had handy since I'm traveling on business. Not sure on weight he didn't know how much they weighed.

That is a Lyman 525gr Sabot Slug.

They are the slugs that I use.

RePete is right about that slug. Standard Lyman mold, like everybody has lying around the reloading bench someplace or other. If he groups 3" at 100 yards, he's marking off the distance by walking 50 yards out and 50 yards back, bench to target. At 1 1/8 oz. and usually loaded to get about 1,200 to 1,350 fps at the pipe, that thing will drop about 3" at 100 yards, but it also goes subsonic, gets unstable and tumbles around that range, so it might hit anywhere, probably sideways or rear end first some of the time. Famous for keyholing paper targets. Cast it hard, and it makes a nice 45 yard hog slug. Cheap to make, not much for long range, and 3" at 100 yards with iron sights makes your pal a miracle worker.

Don't think even Neophyte would be claiming 3" groups at 100 yds with a smoothie AND iron sights. Maybe with a scoped gun. Tough to even see targets 100 yards out without a litle glass to help out.

Hello Rscotth before you jump to any conclusions, we all know all slug guns are not created equal, each has its own preferences and accuracy is dependent on a good snug fit hopefully down the whole barrel. Now could it be that your friend is a lot smarter and knows what he is doing. Ask him as to what load is he using and what wad and gun. Had you said he was using a proper sabot like Accutip or SST then I would doubt it as for those sabots with thicker petals you really need a rifled barrel to impart spin to let the sabot to open and release the bullet in time before the accuracy goes down the drain. There is something different about his slug base. My slug base rim is flat his has a ridge may be he has modefied his hollow base pin or is using a washer to increase the slug weight, look at the picture.
Like to hear what you found from him.

FYI, the majority of our documents and etc. that would classify as reference materials are still available on the archive and documents pages on the main website. We did lose a ton of forum posts and great information that was not duplicated elsewhere when our forums hosts decided to cut and run with everyone's money back in January, but at least we were fortunate to have NOT had these criminals hosting our main site as well as the forums. If there is anything in particular that you'd like us to find and post agan, just email or PM to Admin, and we'll do our best to get what you need.
